Every year in late August, one of Portland’s most spectacular natural events begins: Thousands of Vaux’s Swifts gather in the city as they prepare to migrate to Central America and Venezuela. Migrating swifts often use chimneys as roosts (places to sleep), and they are likely to return to the same roost year after year. One population has been returning to Chapman since the 1980s, and it is one of the largest known roosting sites of migrating Swifts!!

A couple of my neighbors and I went this year and it was  fun!! People bring food, drinks, kids and pets and watch the big yearly event!

  17. Let's see...you and a bunch of other folks go out to sit on the grass in the evening to eat and drink and watch a bunch of birds roost in a chimney. This is what goes for fun in Portland?

    Heh, heh. Just kidding!

Great talking to you! It was so noisy that I could barely hear you but then I'm half deaf anyway...

  21. It is so nice to have picnics on the grounds like yours because it is cold, if the swifts will come here the people will not be able to go out freely like that because it is hot outside, LOL. But the sight i am sure is spectacular, chimneys producing swifts!

  25. It's so strange for birds to do this. We have the Buzzards that return to Hinkley Ohio every year on the SAME DAY! How odd is that? We actually witnessed it one year. Great shot!
