That's My World - The Olympic Peninsula

Share the beauty of your world by joining That's My World, a wonderful meme each Tuesday that is hosted by Klaus, Sandy, Wren, Fishing Guy, Louise and myself. Click on the My World icon above and sign up to play! And! we're on Facebook now!

Over the past year I've written about many of the gorgeous places in my world and many of those are located on the Olympic Peninsula, so today I thought I'd share some of beauty of the whole peninsula. The area has such a variety of things -- starting with weather, which in several areas is strongly effected by what is known as the "rain shadow" effect. Most photos and history are courtesy of Google.

To begin with here is a map of the peninsula.

The Olympic Peninsula is home to some of the few temperate rain forests in the world, including the Hoh, Queets, and Quinault. Rain forest vegetation is concentrated primarily in the western part of the peninsula, as the interior mountains create a rain shadow effect in areas to the east, resulting in a much drier climate in those locales. The Olympic Mountains act as a wall that protects the northeastern Olympic Peninsula and San Juan Islands from the bulk of the rain that moves into the Pacific Northwest.

This is the home of some of the world's largest trees, many draped with thick cloaks of moss, and an astounding array of mushrooms and lichens. The northern slopes are sheltered by a rain shadow that protects the lush valleys and provides the perfect climate for growing colorful, long-lasting flowers, especially lavender. Lodging ranges from quiet bed and breakfast inns, to fishing resorts, country motels and famous historic lodges.

What a fantastically beautiful part of the U. S.

I would love driving up the coastal highway. I drove it from San Franciso to Los Angeles twice and your part of the coast is so different. I love the green of your area, but I don't think my joints could take the humidity needed to acquire that green.

It looks like a couple of the photos were taken at Hurricane Ridge with views of the Elwah River Drainage that crosses through the center of the park. Its a great route over the Low Divide to the Quinalt Rain Forest. The last photo looks like Lake Cresent. It brings great memories of an old home.

The Olympic Peninsula is such a magical place. The dense temperate rainforests could be home to some of the little people. And then there's the dryer areas to the north and east. A virtual wonderland. Thanks for sharing the special place.

I would leave any city for a place like that. After this tour I picture it as in the tv series Northern Exposure.

Beautiful images and interesting info, Sylvia! Shortly after Mom and Dad retired, they visited the Seattle area. They went to spend a day with a friend of Dad's from younger days who lived on the Peninsula and stayed a week. Mom said it was the most beautiful place she had seen.

Sylvia, what beautiful photos! You make me want to visit this place! I have only been to the Tacoma area once and it rained every day and I hated it! I did not get to see this kind of beauty but I did enjoy myself one morning when I went to Nisqually National wildlife refuge!

What Can I Say?
I'm interested in almost everything. Use to like to travel, but it's too expensive now. I take Tai Chi classes, swim, volunteer in a Jump-start program for pre-schoolers. I'm an avid reader and like nearly everyone these days I follow politics avidly. I'm a former teacher and Special Projects Coordinator for a Telecommunications company, Assistant to the President of a Japanese silicon wafer manufacturing company. Am now enjoying retirement -- most of the time. I have two daughters, one son-in-law and two sons scattered all over the country. No grandchildren.
