Every year in late August, one of Portland’s most spectacular natural events begins: Thousands of Vaux’s Swifts gather in the city as they prepare to migrate to Central America and Venezuela. Migrating swifts often use chimneys as roosts (places to sleep), and they are likely to return to the same roost year after year. One population has been returning to Chapman since the 1980s, and it is one of the largest known roosting sites of migrating Swifts!!
A couple of my neighbors and I went this year and it was fun!! People bring food, drinks, kids and pets and watch the big yearly event! |

Now that is a sight worth the picnicking for!! Amazing. YAM xx
Fascinating post and love the 'swifts' circling photo ~ carol, ^_^
Your header photo is a gem!
That looks like so much fun. I love events like this.
Interesting event where people meet together and have good time.
It looks so fun and relaxing!
So amazing to realize how far these little birds must fly.
I love your new header. It gave me a chuckle.
It looks as though you had better luck watching the migration than I did. This looks like a lot of fun!
What a fun day out with your friends watching an amazing event. Hoping your week is going well Sylvia. xx
Yes, a nice photo, A beautiful day full of emotions, beautiful lunch! Greetings!
that looks like a lot of fun.
I like the way everyone gathers to enjoy the spectacle.
never heard of anything like this. Seems like fun to me. But, how do people know when to go there?
One of the halls on the UO campus has those every year and I've been wanting to go see it FOREVER. Never seem to make it, so thank you bunches for the closest I've come.
Very cool, Sylvia! Looks like a fun time watching the swifts enter the chimney and the party atmosphere. We are the seeing the chimney swifts doing the same thing here. What a sight to see! Thanks for sharing your photos! Have a happy week!
Let's see...you and a bunch of other folks go out to sit on the grass in the evening to eat and drink and watch a bunch of birds roost in a chimney. This is what goes for fun in Portland?
Heh, heh. Just kidding!
Great talking to you! It was so noisy that I could barely hear you but then I'm half deaf anyway...
Come visit at L & L Photography sometimes (http://www.landlfotos.com/blog.html)
How great is that! So great everyone shows up for the birds.
Lovely way to spend a day!
Isn't that interesting!
Wow, I've never heard of such a thing but it sounds like fun.
What a great way to spend the day. Just lovely!
It is so nice to have picnics on the grounds like yours because it is cold, if the swifts will come here the people will not be able to go out freely like that because it is hot outside, LOL. But the sight i am sure is spectacular, chimneys producing swifts!
Spectacular moment, I imagine the sound of these birds! Thanks for sharing your images!
hugs

What a great thing to see - big flocks of birds are splendid to watch.

Your photo's are beautiful and interesting YOUR ROYAL HIGHNESS BLOGGING QUEEN. :)))))))))))
wow! What fun for everyone!
It's so strange for birds to do this. We have the Buzzards that return to Hinkley Ohio every year on the SAME DAY! How odd is that? We actually witnessed it one year. Great shot!
So very much nicer than going to a screeching pop concert and its free. Glad you had such a nice day out.
Oh my goodness! This is just so cool! I'd want to go and see that too!
