My 97 year old friend sent this to me, and as a rule, I wouldn't put it on my blog, but there is a lot of wisdom here that could benefit the country and the people. There is also a lot of info that I wasn't aware of before reading this.
Subject: FW:
The Buffet Rule
We must support this...pass it on
and lets see if these idiots understand what people pressure is all about.
Salary of retired US Presidents . . . . . . . . . . . $180,000 FOR LIFE
Salary of House/Senate members . . .
. . . . . $174,000 FOR LIFE This is stupid
Salary of Speaker of the House . . .
. . . . . . .. $223,500 FOR LIFE This is really stupid
Salary of Majority/Minority Leaders
. . . . . . . . $193,400 FOR LIFE Ditto last line
Average Salary of a teacher . . . .
. . . . . . . . . .. $40,065
Average Salary of a deployed Soldier
. . . . . .. . $38,000
I think we found where the cuts
should be made! If you agree pass it on, I just did.
Warren Buffet, in a recent interview
with CNBC, offers one of the best quotes about the debt ceiling:
"I could end the deficit in 5
minutes," he told CNBC. "You just pass a law that says that anytime
there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are
ineligible for re-election.
The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote
for 18 year-olds) took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple!
The people demanded it. That was in 1971 - before computers, e-mail, cell
phones, etc.
Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution,
seven (7) took one (1) year or less to become the law of the land - all because
of public pressure.
Warren Buffet is asking each addressee to
forward this email to a minimum of twenty people on their address list; in turn
ask each of those to do likewise.
In three days, most people in The United
States of America will have the message. This is one idea that really should be
passed around.
Congressional Reform Act of 2013
1. No Tenure / No Pension.
A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in
office and receives no pay when they're out of office.
2. Congress (past, present &
future) participates in Social Security.
All funds in the Congressional retirement fund
move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the
Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It
may not be used for any other purpose.
3. Congress can purchase their own retirement
plan, just as all Americans do.
4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a
pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.
5. Congress loses their current
health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American
people.
6. Congress must equally abide by
all laws they impose on the American people.
7. All contracts with past and
present Congressmen/women are void effective 12/1/14. The American people did
not make this contract with Congressmen/women.
Congress made all these
contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The
Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their
term(s), then go home and back to work.
If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S.) to receive the message. Don't you think it's time?

THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!
If you agree, pass it on. If not, delete.

hey i could get down with that...maybe we would have people running for office for the right reasons instead of to fill their pockets...
Things in my country are organised differently, but those in government will always have more when they are pensioned off, even if the commit the greatest mistakes.
Hear, Hear, Sylvia ... this and many other things need fixing in our country and hopefully we can get the people to fix it before it is too late. I have posted a link to this on my blog and on face book. I also added the "Move to Amend" link to end the asinine "Corporations are People" ruling that has turned our politics and our economy up-side-down. Thanks for speaking up, Sylvia ... I know it isn't easy in this environment, but we do have a lot to lose if we don't speak up.

Yes indeed, this is NOT confined to the USA; every government in the world pays its administrators what appears to be inflated salaries.
Whilst I strongly believe that there is an imbalance; at the same time consider this... CEOs and MDs of private companies get higher pay for the simple reason that (in theory) they work longer, harder, and at an intellectual level which the majority cannot or are not willing to do. They (conditionally) bring more expertise and ideas to the table.
The salaries quoted here for your pollies would be comparable with those of, say, head of BP or some other greed-oriented business. They too would retire on a company-funded pension as reward for their efforts.
Sorting out the mis-users of privilege and travel funds and such is very necessary and certainly, if they are not still in the elected position there is argument for non-pay; but for a 24/7, life-and-death decisions type job where all semblance of anonymity is absent?
I do worry for the trend (manifest largest in US) for open bribery known as party funding from business interests... that however is not the subject here.
...and I would like to add that I am not, nor do I have connections in politics. They couldn't pay me enough...YAM xx
Sounds like some good ideas to me!
The really sad part is that most of the people in Congress are already rich so don't need any extra money.
I often wonder how our country and government got so broken. Congress is just a mess of inefficiency. Who else has such a free ride guaranteed for life? So much for "public servants." Good one, Sylvia - I try to stay nonpolitical, but sometimes my blood boils. I don't point the finger at one party or another - each is equally bad!
Amen to that! We have the same inequality between the people and their elected representatives here. I wonder she the speaker of the house gets so much more than the president???
A sentance containing the words 'snouts' and 'troughs' comes to mind!
