Monastery Life

A young monk arrives at the monastery.
He is assigned to helping the other monks
in copying the old canons and laws of the
church by hand.
He notices, however, that all of the monks
are copying from copies, not from the original
manuscript. So, the new monk goes to the
head abbot to question this, pointing out that
if someone made even a small error in the first
copy, it would never be picked up! In fact, that
error would be continued in all of the subsequent
copies.
The head monk, says, 'We have been copying
from the copies for centuries, but you make
a good point, my son.'
He goes down into the dark caves underneath
the monastery where the original manuscripts
are held as archives in a locked vault that hasn't
been opened for hundreds of years. Hours go
by and nobody sees the old abbot.
So, the young monk gets worried and goes down
to look for him. He sees him banging his head
against the wall and wailing.
"We missed the R !
We missed the R !
We missed the fu%@#ing R !"
His forehead is all bruised and he is
crying uncontrollably. The young monk
asks the old abbot, 'What's wrong, father?'
With a choking voice, the old abbot replies,
'The word was...

Getting Old? Or Getting Better?

A good friend of mine shared this with me and I loved it and want to share it with you today.
As I've aged, I've become kinder to myself, and less critical of  myself. I've become my own friend..

I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging.

Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer  until 4 AM or sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60 &70's, and if I, at the same time, wish  to weep over a lost love .. I will.
I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with  abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set.

They, too, will get old.

I know I am sometimes forgetful.  But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And I  eventually remember the important things.

Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not  break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody's beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken  hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will  never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have  my hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever  etched into deep grooves on my face.
So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about  what other people think. I don't question myself anymore..
I've even earned the right to be wrong.

So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I  like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever,
but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could  have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert  every single day(if I feel like it).

Who Reads Our Newspapers???

1. The Wall Street Journal is read by the people who run
the country.

2. The Washington Post is read by people who think they run
the country.

3. The New York Times is read by people who think they
should run the country and who are very good at crossword puzzles.

4. USA Today is read by people who think they ought to run
the country but don't really understand The New York Times. They do,
however, like their statistics shown in pie charts.

5. The Los Angeles Times is read by people who wouldn't
mind running the country, if they could find the time ... and if they didn't
have to leave Southern California to do it.

6. The Boston Globe is read by people whose parents used
to run the country and did a poor job of it, thank you very much.

7. The New York Daily News is read by people who aren't
too sure who's running the country and don't really care as long as they can
get a seat on the train.

8. The New York Post is read by people who don't care who
is running the country as long as they do something really scandalous,
preferably while intoxicated.

9. The Miami Herald is read by people who are running
another country, but need the baseball scores.

10. The San Francisco Chronicle is read by people who
aren't sure if there is a country or that anyone is running it; but if so,
they oppose all that they stand for. There are occasional exceptions if the
leaders are handicapped, minority, feminist, atheist dwarfs who also happen
to be illegal aliens from any other country or galaxy, provided of course,
that they are not Republicans.

11. The National Enquirer is read by people trapped in line
at the grocery store.

What Can I Say?

What Can I Say?
I'm interested in almost everything. Use to like to travel, but it's too expensive now. I take Tai Chi classes, swim, volunteer in a Jump-start program for pre-schoolers. I'm an avid reader and like nearly everyone these days I follow politics avidly. I'm a former teacher and Special Projects Coordinator for a Telecommunications company, Assistant to the President of a Japanese silicon wafer manufacturing company. Am now enjoying retirement -- most of the time. I have two daughters, one son-in-law and two sons scattered all over the country. No grandchildren.
