An Amazing Look Back!!

1911 Ford Model T

THE YEAR IS 1911
This will boggle your mind, I know it did mine!
************ ********* ***********
The year is 1911  --- One hundred and one years ago. What a difference a century makes!

Here are some statistics for the Year 1911:
************ ********* ************
The average life expectancy for men was 47 years.
Fuel for this car was sold in drug stores only.
Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.
Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.
There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads.
The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower .
The average US wage in 1910 was 22 cents per hour.
The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year ..
A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year,
A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.
More than 95 percent of all births took place at home .
Ninety percent of all Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!
Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which
were condemned in the press AND the government as "substandard."
Sugar cost four cents a pound.
Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.
Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.
Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.
Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason.
The Five leading causes of death were:
1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke
The American flag had 45 stars...
The population of Las Vegas , Nevada , was only 30!!!
Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented yet.
There was neither a Mother's Day nor a Father's Day.
Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write and only 6 percent
of all Americans had graduated from high school.
Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter
at the local corner drugstores.
Back then pharmacists said, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, Regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health!"
Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help ....
There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A. !
I am now going to share  this you without typing it myself.

From there, it will be sent to others all over the WORLD - all in a matter of seconds!
Try to imagine what it may be like in another 101 years.

Well Sylvia.
First, I must admire the all time classic car the beautiful 1911 model Ford T.
Then your statistics made think of how much simpler and better, life could be back then.
Have a beautiful day.

Interesting facts. things have changed a bit. Would be interesting to have a crystal ball and look 100 years down the line.

In 1911---my mom was 11 years old and Dad was 22. Daddy was in the Navy about that time I think...

Times --they are a-changin'....

Unbelievable.. Even in 1965, I started teaching school (with a college degree)--and my whopping salary was $4,110... I thought I was RICH... ha ha

Hugs,
Betsy

No wonder my almost 90 year old other could not comprehend computers. she had seen so many changes already!
Some of these are really startling!

We've come a long ways. I remember my Grandmother telling me "You can have the good old days!" Her husband died when my Dad was just a little boy so she raised three kids herself during the depression.

Love old cars! And this one is so beautiful! And the others behind it look gorgeous too!
And the information about 1911 is quite amazing!
For sure life has changed a lot during the last hundred yeas but I don't think it will change as much during this century!
Thanks for sharing, Sylvia;o)

Hope you are having a fabulous week * Hugs***

That's quite amazing when you stop to think of it. My parents were born in 1910 and 1912 -- I guess they really outlived their life expectancy -- as they died at 94 and 88~

What Can I Say?

What Can I Say?
I'm interested in almost everything. Use to like to travel, but it's too expensive now. I take Tai Chi classes, swim, volunteer in a Jump-start program for pre-schoolers. I'm an avid reader and like nearly everyone these days I follow politics avidly. I'm a former teacher and Special Projects Coordinator for a Telecommunications company, Assistant to the President of a Japanese silicon wafer manufacturing company. Am now enjoying retirement -- most of the time. I have two daughters, one son-in-law and two sons scattered all over the country. No grandchildren.
