Reflective Thoughts for a Saturday

Between Prop 8, increased threats against Obama, a sudden increase in race related incidents and the roller coaster stock market, I found myself taking a downward slide mentally and emotionally today. I don't like it when those dark clouds suddenly seem to obscure all the bright and beautiful things in the world, in my world. So, I did what I frequently do when this happens -- in addition to a march against Prop 8 -- I took pictures. And as I focused on the beautiful skies we had here today, I began to reflect on the good things this year has brought into my life. Blogging for one and a host of wonderful new friends who share their lives and hopes and dreams in this wonderful blogosphere and consequently, with me. And photography which has helped me to focus on the beautiful world around me. I have so many things to be thankful and grateful for that it would be truly sad if I allowed the ugly things to creep in and blacken my view of the world. So, that being said, here are a few of the beautiful things.

And what a beautiful world it is.

These things are going to happen given there is a handover period. Once things beocme more stable again then things will improve. I cannot tell you the difference it made when our government got replaced after 12 years.

Keep taking pictures and looking at the sky. When I look at the sky I instantly feel better. And you are so talented at photography!!! I thought you had been doing it for years...

keep your focus there will always be the negative side but if we look for the good side it will shine. it's our choice.

Thanks for the reminder not to focus completely on the insanity. My friend called me this weekend to read me two letter to the editor in her local paper, that weere the most rabid, virulent rantings about Obama, it was nauseating! And then the increasing opposition to gay marriage - I, too was letting it get to me. YOu helped me remember to balance it out with gratitude and beauty.

It seems to me that when you sent us pictures of beautiful things you should have included a picture of yourself. The sensitivity of your soul shone through in this post.

There is way too much craziness in the world, that's true. It has always been true. You just keep focusing on the hope that you felt on November third. Stroll down and take a peek at those incredible photos of your lovely daughter dancing the tango and sleep in peace.

We just need to make sure we never allow ourselves to become a part of the ugliness. As long as we don't let it inside, it can't hurt us, or hold us down for long.

Thanks for the lovely and serene photographs. They were a nice thing to put myself to beed with this evening.

You are a very strong and smart lady, Sylvia. I love how you recognized feeling down and focused your energy toward beautiful peaceful things. You are practicing many of the teachings of Buddhism that I grew up with. Keep up the good meditations and thank you for brightening our day.

Beautiful words! Love your photos and your blog too! I found you through Pietro, I guess... and I am glad I did.

Your music of Mahler is fantastic. The 5th Symphony is the theme of the movie of Luchino Visconti, "Death in Venice". A remarkable film, did you know it?

Have a beautiful Sunday!
See you soon!

We knew the hate stuff was going to come. It just means that the right side won this battle in the good fight. As for Prop 8, it hasn't made it through the courts yet. I don't see how it can survive a legal challenge.

Thank you for sharing the beautiful things in your life.
As for me, I got tired of looking at my own silly face, and replaced it with marigolds for my profile picture. I think it's a vast improvement, and mush more cheery to view.

I'm having such a blue day today, and I did just the same thing: I went out and took a hundred photos in my favourite forest park! When I came home and saw your post, I laughed--I needed that laugh too.

I hope you're feeling better, Sylvia! The pictures are beautiful.

I'm really glad I met you, Sylvia. You are a person who so obviously loves and appreciates life, love and other people.

Thank you for being an ally on behalf of our GLBT communities.

I have felt much as you do off and on since the election. But I try to focus on looking and moving forward. Beauty and love really help me too.

Sylvia, that photo of the geese is just fantastic. It looks like a painting done my Manet. You should definitely enlarge that one and frame it.

I am hopeful, like K, that propsition 8 will be overturned. It is clearly unconstitutional.

Good for you and thanks for sharing. After listening to … looking at … and writing about the fires here in So Cal, your beautiful photos lifted MY spirits too. In addition, one of my bloggy friends not only LOVED the MSNBC video about the Prop 8 vote in California that I posted last week at Blog Rolls & Bling, she decided to teach herself how to embed a video on her Typepad blog so she could share it too. I feel confident it will be overturned because it’s clearly discriminatory.
Hugs and blessings,

I especially liked the last photo. It looks very like the hand-tinted photos that were popular in the 1930s and 40s. So glad that you are enjoying life now that the stress of the election is over.

I'm interested in almost everything. Use to like to travel, but it's too expensive now. I take Tai Chi classes, swim, volunteer in a Jump-start program for pre-schoolers. I'm an avid reader and like nearly everyone these days I follow politics avidly. I'm a former teacher and Special Projects Coordinator for a Telecommunications company, Assistant to the President of a Japanese silicon wafer manufacturing company. Am now enjoying retirement -- most of the time. I have two daughters, one son-in-law and two sons scattered all over the country. No grandchildren.
