Hooked on Phonics

A teacher reports:
My five-year old students are learning to read.
Yesterday one of them pointed at a picture in a zoo book and said,
"Look at this! It's a frickin' elephant!"

I took a deep breath, then asked..."What did you call it?"
"It's a frickin' elephant! It says so on the picture!"

And so it does...

" A f r i c a n Elephant "

Hooked on phonics! Ain't it wonderful?

You get me every time. I'm sitting here thinking, ok, what do you tell a child about the word "frickin," then, bam, the punchline.

Hi Sylvia,

That was cute; a nice way to kick off the weekend.

Have a great one!

ROFL! Excellent and clever; we are innocent until proven guilty after all.

This reminded me that my mother used to pick up my niece from childcare, and one day my sister (the child's mother) picked her up instead. "What the hell are you doing here?" my 3-year-old niece asked. Nobody else heard, but my (very young) sister had to ask her, "WHAT did you say?" in a tone that drew everyone's attention so they could hear my niece repeat, loudly and clearly, "I SAID, what the hell are you doing here?" We all learned that day to never ask for a repeat performance...just MOVE ALONG quickly!

So I'm laughing again now!

As a retired teacher I have to say this is priceless!

I'm interested in almost everything. Use to like to travel, but it's too expensive now. I take Tai Chi classes, swim, volunteer in a Jump-start program for pre-schoolers. I'm an avid reader and like nearly everyone these days I follow politics avidly. I'm a former teacher and Special Projects Coordinator for a Telecommunications company, Assistant to the President of a Japanese silicon wafer manufacturing company. Am now enjoying retirement -- most of the time. I have two daughters, one son-in-law and two sons scattered all over the country. No grandchildren.
