The Window Through Which We Look

A young couple moves into a new neighborhood.
The next morning while they are eating breakfast,

The young woman sees her neighbor hanging the wash outside.
"That laundry is not very clean", she said.
"She doesn't know how to wash correctly.
Perhaps she needs better laundry soap."

Her husband looked on, but remained silent.

Every time her neighbor would hang her wash to dry,
The young woman would make the same comments.

About one month later, the woman was surprised to see a
Nice clean wash on the line and said to her husband:

"Look, she has learned how to wash correctly.
I wonder who taught her this."

The husband said, "I got up early this morning and
Cleaned our windows."

And so it is with life. What we see when watching others
Depends on the purity of the window through which we look.

What a great little story that is--and so painfully true!

...except of course, the part about a husband washing windows. LOL ... though I suppose he did it to shut her up?
;-)

Loved this post, Sylvia! When we discover that we're seeing other people not through a lens, but through a mirror, our criticisms dry up very quickly indeed.

It reminds me of the old joke about the husband complaining that his wife was getting deaf. To check it out he stood behind her chair and asked her what they were having for dinner. She didn't respond so he moved closer and asked the same question in a louder tone of voice. She still didn't respond so he stood right behind her and shouted the question. She replied, "For the third time, we're having chicken."

I guess this proves my assertion that men make better housecleaners! (Don't tell my wife what I just said.)

THAT would never happen here. THAT would be the day when The Husband would wash a window, (or anything else.)

Perspective is everything!!
I guess it is the half empty/ half full frame of mind.

Point well made! So often we don't see the problem is on our side of the window.

thanks for a great post!
my husband does all kind of housework but
every individual should clean his/her 'own windows' every now and then!

What Can I Say?
I'm interested in almost everything. Use to like to travel, but it's too expensive now. I take Tai Chi classes, swim, volunteer in a Jump-start program for pre-schoolers. I'm an avid reader and like nearly everyone these days I follow politics avidly. I'm a former teacher and Special Projects Coordinator for a Telecommunications company, Assistant to the President of a Japanese silicon wafer manufacturing company. Am now enjoying retirement -- most of the time. I have two daughters, one son-in-law and two sons scattered all over the country. No grandchildren.
