A Look Back -- and What a Difference Time Makes!

Back in the 1929 Financial Crash it was said that some Wall Street Stockbrokers and Bankers JUMPED from their office windows and committed suicide when confronted with the news of their firms and clients financial ruin ... . . Many people were said to almost feel a little sorry for them . . . . . .

In 2008 the attitude has changed.

I'll bet there were some signs like that in 1929 too! Just smaller and not captured by photographers.

Good morning Sylvia,

In light of AIG's insistence on paying out $160 million in bonuses using taxpayer dollars which were intended to keep the company financially solvent, I can understand the animosity and frustration of US citizens.

Unfortunately, AIG isn't solely culpable in this. The elected officials in Washington deemed it necessary to give the irresponsible individuals who run this company bailout money (not one but twice in the last 10 months).

Those legislators who voted to easily give money without establishing compliancy policies are just as much to blame for citizen animosity and frustration.

Good one! I guess the big difference this time is the fat cats scammed the cash and kept it, they didn't lose their own shirts.

Yes, times have changed. In 1929 people really suffered. They didn't have much to begin with but now America has become very affluent (is that the word I am looking for?) with their big houses, big cars and losing those things is heartbreaking. But not like losing the last piece of bread you had back in the 30s. Perhaps this will make America make better choices and priorities.

Yes, jump, or at the very least turn down the bonuses and hang their heads in shame.

The greed and lack of conscience on the part of the top executives makes me crazy!

The sign made me laugh out loud (bravo to whomever put it there!) but thinking about your post, you know it *is* saddening, and makes me angry, to think that having honour and a sense of responsibility used to be the norm, and it seems we lost that somewhere. Our government in my country is the same--they're spending millions of the nation's money on fluff perks to themselves while stripping already meagre benefits from disabled and elderly people, and when confronted with how greedy and mean that is, they /defend/ themselves. AAUUGH!! It's amazing and horrifying at the same time.

Oh Sylvia. You make me laugh and think and laugh again. Thank you!

I shouldn't have laughed but I did!

I'm interested in almost everything. Use to like to travel, but it's too expensive now. I take Tai Chi classes, swim, volunteer in a Jump-start program for pre-schoolers. I'm an avid reader and like nearly everyone these days I follow politics avidly. I'm a former teacher and Special Projects Coordinator for a Telecommunications company, Assistant to the President of a Japanese silicon wafer manufacturing company. Am now enjoying retirement -- most of the time. I have two daughters, one son-in-law and two sons scattered all over the country. No grandchildren.
