Mary Ann Glendon, a conservative Harvard law professor who was U.S. ambassador to the Vatican under George W. Bush, has announced that she will not be accepting the Laetare Medal at the University of Notre Dame's commencement ceremony on May 17, NBC's Christopher Wilson reports. In her letter to Notre Dame President Rev. John Jenkins, Glendon stated that she would no longer be accepting, citing the conflict with President Barack Obama's presence as both a commencement speaker and a recipient of an honorary degree.

What Can I Say?
I'm interested in almost everything. Use to like to travel, but it's too expensive now. I take Tai Chi classes, swim, volunteer in a Jump-start program for pre-schoolers. I'm an avid reader and like nearly everyone these days I follow politics avidly. I'm a former teacher and Special Projects Coordinator for a Telecommunications company, Assistant to the President of a Japanese silicon wafer manufacturing company. Am now enjoying retirement -- most of the time. I have two daughters, one son-in-law and two sons scattered all over the country. No grandchildren.

They should give her an honorary degree in absentia, and make her a Doctor of Assholelogy. She's certainly qualified.

You know what makes this country so great? We have the freedom to have opinions, no matter where on the spectrum they may fall.It's what makes this country great and why so many flock here. Not just because of the opportunities or the need to escape certain death. It's the freedom to be or not be what you choose.
When I think about other parts of the world where dissent can be punishable or where one group decides to hack a woman's breast or rape women. In this country we are defined by our freedom even when others wonder why.
If this woman chooses to make a political statement, that is her right as an American. I don't have to agree with it but when I support her freedom I also choose to support the freedom for those whose choice is silenced through legislation. I would hope she remembers this freedom she exercises when another American expresses their political view on marriage, abortion and equality for all to name a few.

I think she stated that her biggest objection to Obama is that he is pro choice. Of course it's her privilege to make a statement, but I really think she is very foolish in doing so.
Having strong opinions is one thing, but insulting the President because he doesn't agree with her stand is another. This is one of many reasons that I am vehemently for separation of Church and State. Her opinion is based on her religion.
